London’s Pirate Radio

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Anyone remember React FM (Jungle mid 90’s)? Still got cassettes with recorded sessions from them.

Pirate radio is everywhere in London, born in the 60’s from rusting anti-aircraft towers in the mouth of the Thames. Today’s broadcasts are hidden in plain sight, transmitting from secret tower block studios via homemade rooftop antennas. We put our boots on and went exploring.

DJ Spooky, an Introduction

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

songs_1-1I have to dedicate a post to this talented guy: DJ Spooky AKA Paul Miller .
Yes DJ Spooky sounds a bit corny, but doesn’t DJ Shadow? One MAJOR thing this guy has over other turntablist based musicians is his wide ranging talents and studies. Among other things he is a published author (MIT Press) and respected political commentator. What I love most is his diverse work. His music ranges from dub & drum’n'bass to collaborations with classical musicians (see above image), and incorporation of Eastern sounds such as Buddhist chanting and arabic rap. A powerful mix (one of my favourites) that sums this up and more is the following: System Error_Al-Yamamah
Why more people haven’t heard of him I don’t know. He’s created at least 10 albums. I have well over 150 tracks and mixes that I’ve collected over the years. Over all, a creative & wise DJ/producer/author/new media artist! Look out for this guy!

Uproot, mix album by DJ Rupture

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

arton7112If you don’t know, DJ Rupture is a cross-genre DJ with wide ranging influences. Just want to give a nod to his new album Uproot (available on iTunes etc). Its a great mix album, that is more chilled than most of his other work, and just goes down a treat. In contrast to this chilled album if you’re a bit of a jungalist like me - another Album of his which is mixed just as well (but in a more mentalist fashion) is Minesweeper Suite (also in iTunes).
Thank you Rupture!

JRM - Old School Jungle Mix Set

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

jungle_mixUsed to mix jungle / DnB a lot. So have quite a collection of old school records. This is one of my best sets (was never a great DJ, always got carried away) old school jungle mix by JRM. Only about 30 mins. the first couple of tracks are kind of old school rave/hardcore then tracks such as 6 Million Ways remix, Warhead, Droppin Science track etc etc. Enjoy.

600 Track, Hip-Hop Megamix

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

bobby_cIts true, NY DJ Bobby Corridor put together what may be the most comprehensive DJ mix set of Hip-hop ever recorded (bobbycorridor_hiphopmegamix.mp3), 600 tracks in about an hour (10 tracks every minute). The tracks aren’t just slammed together, this is great mixing, so smooth you mostly won’t notice the changes (lots of instrumentals used, i think). Records from Wu-Tang to Tribe Called Quest to Dr Dre, Biggie, Jeru, BDP, Madlib, Snoop etc etc, find the full track listing and more here.
